Out now: an exciting new study that highlights the potential of rigorous chemical assessments when trying to distinguish diagenetic from biological mineralization in deep time! ⚗️🧪🔬💎 Baumgartner et al.: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.11…

Today I learned that two of my favorite scientists, Dr. Nick Lane and Dr. Bruce Damer who have opposing views as to where life began (deep sea hydrothermal vents vs hot spring pools), met a few years back. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall. I would have loved to have heard that debate.

#IOoL2024 was a full success! Many new connections were established and new friends were made. A big thank you goes to our amazing co-organizers Omer Markovitch, Celia Blanko, and especially to local host Yannick Geiger | @yannickgeiger.bsky.social who lead us through these exciting three days! 🙏👏

This week’s plot depicts how organic carbon could be sequestered in early Mars’ crust. Hydrothermal alteration of ultramafic rocks into smectite clays creates methane, which is trapped in the subsurface, possibly accounting for a significant part of early Mars’ atmosphere. (1/2)

Excited to share my review on reconstructing early life, out Annual Reviews! It covers past and future prospects for reviving extinct biochemistry, and how integrating our 4-billion-year planetary history with biochemical evolution can advance biology. annualreviews.org/content/journa…

New IISER to be established in Gandhinagar . As ⁦Prof N Sathyamurthy⁩ said :"If they want to start more IISERs , let them as long as they want to fund them adequately " . We all know the perils of sub-critical funding !! timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/ahmedabad…

Big article reviewing Earth-Life co-evolution in the Precambrian. "The interaction of life and Earth was and is reciprocal, hence the term biogeodynamics...." True. sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
