don’t really see anyone talking about this but: arrestees at CUNY were charged with *felonies* while arrestees at Columbia were charged with misdemeanors. nobody should be charged with anything but it is a travesty that poorer & racialized students bear the brunt of this struggle

Student protesters gathered again outside of commencement today at the University of Utah. Two minutes into setting up, campus police arrested a member.

Since October 7th, I've joined protests, fundraising events for Gaza, and students on campuses.

As a Jew and someone who has a ton of friends and family in Israel, I want to share some thoughts on claims of antisemitism in the movement and student encampments:

Every year, “everybody who’s anybody,” goes down to Selma, AL to commemorate . So it’s safe to assume that we all fundamentally understand that the March and occupation across the Edmund Pettus Bridge was peaceful… 1/

Dear Uga faculty colleagues: a faculty letter calling for the immediate un-suspension of the suspended students from Monday’s protest is in circulation. Please send me a DM if you would like to add your name to it.

That horrible antisemitism bill attacks academic Jewish scholarship in favor of protecting Israel. Like I’ve been saying. It’s not about Jews. It’s about Israel. Your fealty to a nation state is putting Jewish lives and culture and scholarship at risk

These scholars missed the entire three disciplines I work across (and more)... who wants to co-write a rebuttal to this?

Walked past protest scene at @uottawa 2x today. Both times peaceful, crowd relatively small. Sure there are tents, but as long as they don’t incite hatred or cause injury or damage, I don’t see any reason to remove them - not that there’s any sign of university trying to do so.

I watched the video of Dr. Sami Schalk. It looks like they are going to tear her head off. Proud of every professor who knows that you put your body between your students and harm AND enraged at what university and police goons have done to so many of us now.

It is absolutely surreal that I spent part of my day today in a Walgreens, with my boss, looking for eye wash in-case our students and colleagues were tear gassed or received injuries to their eyes. What an utter failure and disgrace by the university.

All praise to Prof. Sami Schalk, who protected her students w her body. They ripped off her dress and hurt her so badly that she is now at the hospital. Dr. Schalk literally wrote the book on Black Disability Politics. Talk about putting your body on the line for your politics!

CW: Police violence

I’m home. I’m significantly bruised, in a lot of pain & my shoulder is sprained. I’ve been told to return to the hospital if certain things happen which might be signs of internal damage, esp from the strangulation which you can see briefly in the video here

So I was supposed to deliver the keynote at a @columbia symposium on climate and language this Friday, but I have informed the organizers that, with true sorrow, I am pulling out because I will not be associated with this university at this political moment.
