Rx burning isn't new. Millenia ago Indigenous people lit intentional fire as a spiritual practice, but also to cultivate foods and take care of the forest. But colonization and genocide wiped cultural burning from the landscape.

“The consequences of the CZU fire woke people up and made them realize we cannot continue managing the landscapes as we have been,” Val Lopez, Chairman of the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band said. “People are listening now.”

State and local gov't and agencies are also listening. “We’ve done a great job of putting fires out for the last 100-something-years in many areas of the state that are meant to burn fairly frequently,” said Andy Hubbs, forester with CAL FIRE CZU

Forest litter and fuels have built up to an unhealthy level across many forestcapes in CA. “Until we can get some fire back on the ground, that’s really the only way to mitigate the larger fires that we’re seeing, that will only get worse year after year after year."

Even though people are paying attention, and the state could spend as much as $1.5 billion on "wildfire prevention and emergency prep" over the next year, the question remains if enough funding, and consistent attention will be put towards Rx burning.

That's necessary for the ecological and wildfire risk reduction benefits of planned fire to take hold.

“We need to be consistently putting money towards good fire. It can't just be ‘Oh we had a really bad fire season so we're going to throw a bunch of money at it next year,’” Childress said. “You need to build a workforce that can do it well and smartly.”
