I just learned about this today! 🤯. wheelofnames.com allows you to add any text you want onto a spin wheel and boom, students have a topic, a prompt, or a question to answer/ask. I’m trying this with my FSF1 Ss tomorrow!!

I am not looking for sympathy. Simply showing what virtual learning and teaching looks like at my place. My new living room furniture. I can’t show you what it sounds like, but I can tell you it’s two children yelling at their iPads while dad teaches and troubleshoots for all.

Parents frequently ask teachers to weigh in on the ‘suitability’ of FRENCH IMMERSION for their children. Are these teachers familiar with the research evidence on 2nd language learning? Or, are they basing their recommendations on widespread but unsubstantiated beliefs? 🤔

COMMON MYTH: Children should be proficient in English before entering French immersion. RESEARCH EVIDENCE: English language proficiency is not a prerequisite for French language learning. Learning French has been shown to enhance English language development.

Switching from FRENCH IMMERSION (FI) to the regular English program rarely ‘fixes’ students’ academic problems because their difficulties are often ‘pervasive’ - unrelated to the language of instruction. Support in the FI setting is what they need, so why is it so hard to access?

Some FRENCH IMMERSION (FI) students struggle to acquire French language skills, and some take longer than others to gain proficiency in the French language. The question we should be asking is, “What supports will they need?” NOT “Is switching to English something to consider?”

Every time we encourage a parent to withdraw their child from FRENCH IMMERSION (FI) or discourage a prospective parent from enrolling their child in FI, our actions perpetuate the ‘elitist’ characterization of FI. Isn’t it time to offer at-risk FI students the support they need?
