Starting from 2024, Milan will introduce a 30 km/h (20 mph) speed limit within the whole city. This is another fundamental step to make Milan a safer, healthier, greener city for people. Thanks Marco Mazzei and the city council for having voted for this change.

It's a kind of magic. You open a school street for people and people immediately pops up in the street. Is there anyone who prefers metal boxes to smiles? #piazzeaperte #streetsforkids #workinprogress

From a redundant street to a neighbourhood plaza, Piazza Belloveso is a paradigm of Milan's #PiazzeAperte program. An accelerator of incremental processes of re-appropriation of public spaces in neighborhoods, through a collaboration between active citizens and the institution.

One of these pics talks about the future of cities. The other one depicts an urban space filled with tin boxes. Since yesterday, Via Beroldo is a pedestrian school street! #piazzeaperte #streetsforkids

The renewal of the Milanese dream: After reclaiming more than 20,000 m2 of streets in less than five years. Comune di Milano receives applications for 87 new public space projects near 250 of Milan schools. The people—and kids—of Milan have spoken and are standing up for their streets.

This school street in Milan shows how a street can change when you change the perspective from cars to childrens' well being #piazzeaperte #streetsforkids

When designing public space, we can foster private mobility or public life. Look at Largo Toscanini in Milan, before and after the construction of a new metro line. Do we really have to choose?

It is not radical to turn school streets into safe and vibrant places for children. It is radical to keep them as is. —Via Sacchini in #Milan as #PiazzeAperti (📸 by Demetrio Scopelliti)

The Italian parliament is now discussing a revision of the Traffic Code that severely limits road safety, the control of traffic speed and the development of active mobility. Road violence victims families are mobilizing to ask a review. #codicedellastrage

This was a street for cars. Now, it is a playful area for people. How many redundant, useless streets like this in Milan we could design for playing in our cities? Changing the status quo is a matter of priority. Cars vs Children. What do you care for? #streetsforkids

In Milan, an anonymous street like too many, useful only for parking vehicles, has become a great public space. Piazze Aperte empowers communities who live around schools that changing the street is possible, easy and even fun. #piazzeaperte

If there isn't a square in front of your school, you can always invent one. Milan's #piazzeaperte program is changing perspective about streets as public spaces. Look at how grey, rendundant parking lots can become colorful playful open squares at the hearth of neighbourhoods
