Opened OTD 1957 … The Alpha Cinema - Rathcoole . Much like the Lido it opened in probably not the best era for movie going . It would close in 1972. .

21 years ago today, an arson attack left North Street Arcade in ruins. Despite numerous redevelopment proposals, it remains derelict to this day. How much longer can we allow these historic buildings to deteriorate, and what will it take to finally save our built heritage...

NIFRS are currently attending a fire in the former Herman’s Mill, Sion Mills. A total of 36 personnel including 6 appliances and an aerial appliance are attending the incident. Locals are advised to keep windows/doors shut and avoid the area to support firefighting operations.

The list features well known and loved buildings across the country. 10% of listed buildings in Northern Ireland are now at risk and there are now over 1100 buildings on the at risk register.

Historic building grants for private owners leave much to be desired, VAT on historic building repairs is unjust and the reluctance from Government Departments and Councils to use enforcement powers all contribute to this stasis. There is neither carrot nor stick at present.

Basically, Castlebrooke first submitted early plans almost a decade ago. It was granted permission for various elements in 2020. But almost no work began. Fresh renewal applications for most of the scheme were submitted last year. But they have now been withdrawn. 1/2

It's time for Castlebrooke to work with the people of this city & BCC. The Assembly Rooms need to come into public ownership and the rest of the site needs broken down into smaller sections to be redeveloped. As Greens we will continue to fight for Belfast City Centre.
