(3 of 10) I have provided pictures of them which came from a book published in 1607 by Edward Topsell, which is approximately 115 years after Columbus discovered America. I first became aware of these two animals 18 years ago when I visited the Linda Hall Library in KCMO.

(4 of 10) I distinctly remember that day where the man at the front desk with a white beard showed me books from Copernicus which was interesting to me due to my interest in astronomy.

(5 of 10) I was mesmerized as he told me about these two animals and that they both specifically were thought to exist in the New World. Not too long ago (July 8 to be exact), I was reminded of this memory and consulted a journal entry I made 17 years ago.

(6 of 10) I contacted that library and was able to find the primary resource for that memory. It was interesting to read that book. I am not proud to say this but as I was reading the book, I had the thought of looking down on the author for believing in Unicorns.

(7 of 10) A calm gentle thought then came to me reminding me that the truth is he is not much different than we are in that he truly was doing his best as he understood it at the time.

(8 of 10) This is evident through his logic that because there are different varieties of other animals that there most surely must be many different varieties of unicorns.

(9 of 10) I also personally find that we are also not different from him in other ways because in my opinion we also have things in our day that we believe in that in my opinion simply does not exist. This is, by the way, the one thing that these two animals have in common.

(10 of 10) They simply do not exist. Just because something is suggested to exist does not mean that it does.
