The great Bob Fulton has passed away this week at the age of 101. I only got to know him during the last decade of his life, and those years alone could fill up the pages of a wonderfully surreal biography. Bob was larger than life. 1/

He was the Scottish trade unionist and force of nature of the anti-fascist movement. At Rolls Royce East Kilbride in 1974, his defiant and principled refusal to work on Pinochet’s aircraft engines grounded the majority of Chile’s Air Force, during the dictatorship. 2/

His colleagues rallied around him that day, likely preventing him from getting fired. Their collective stand lasted over four years until the engines mysteriously vanished from the factory yard in August 1978. 3/

Bob’s commitment to human rights resonated beyond his own time and place. Already nicknamed the “Tank Commander” at Rolls Royce, for his years spent with the REME in Italy and Germany during World War II, Bob became a Honourary Commander of the Republic in Chile 4/

Humble in his demeanor (aside from the time he told me he was the funniest person he knew), Bob was a giant in the everlasting fight for human dignity and the lives of those who were lucky to know him. 5/

In a different timeline, he would have loved to be a dairy farmer. His favourite memory was of his late-wife Lottie agreeing to marry him. His favourite song was Paul Robeson’ Swing Low Sweet Chariot and his favourite meal was mince and tatties with “maybe some beans”. 6/

He is survived by his daughter Lyn, son, Roy, son-in-law and confidant Donal, a loving family and many friends in many countries. He will be deeply missed. Compañero Bob Fulton!
