The term interoception seems to mean different things to different people. When you think of interoception, which afferents are you thinking of?

My own opinion on interoception is that Bud Craig, who passed away this summer, had it right. See this nice obituary published last week: doi.org/10.1038/s41593…

I just learned that, even after separation from the brain, the spinal cord of a frog will use a limb to scratch an irritation, and if that limb is blocked, it will use another limb. Pretty remarkable spinally-mediated behavior!

According to said book, James described this as “the persuance of future ends and the choice of means for their attainment”, but Weiskrantz uses it to illustrate that subconscious circuits mediate seemingly willed behaviors so it’s hard to know which actions require consciousness

Very proud of Tayler Sheahan and Charles Warwick for their work showing that GRPR spinal output neurons convey itch from the spinal cord to the brain and that kappa opioid receptor agonists target these neurons to inhibit itch. So cool and satisfying! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

I love this video—look at how output neurons from the right spinal cord ascend in both the ispi and contralateral tracts, then cross over in the PBN. These ipsi projections may account for the pain that arises despite lesions of the contralateral ATL. Great work HAICHAO

Excited to share our paper on mouse DRG genetic toolkit that reveals morphological and physiological diversity of somatosensory neuron subtypes. Thanks to all the co-authors! cell.com/cell/fulltext/…
