First full day at #SINGUSA2019 and it has been eye opening. I realize how lucky I am as an indigenous person within my department at UAA. My mind has been repeatedly blown and new ways of looking at ethical problems in genetic studies. Just on day ONE!

On Day 2 of #SINGUSA2019, we consider how to decolonize and Indigenize both the lab and genomic research as we extract our DNA and prepare to sequence part of the human mitochondrial genome. @SINGConsortium

On day 3 of #SINGUSA2019, Emilia Huerta, @science_punx, and Amber Nashoba, PhD lead a bioinformatics lab exploring human genetic diversity using public data, as we also consider the racist & colonial ideologies that underlie many pop gen models & have shaped the production of these datasets.

Learning how to run Structure in genetic studies... learning that even genetic studies can be skewed by sample sizes, populations, and locations. All 3 of us had different results. #SINGUSA2019 #alwaysquestionresults

Today we’re looking at a sequence from our mtDNA! We inherit mtDNA from our mother, their mothers, & so on. Would it be okay for me to publish this data as just my own? Should I ask my mom & her siblings as well? What about full genome sequencing? #SINGUSA2019 #mtDNA #Bioethics

It appears things within SAA have not changed... Because I criticized the organization's handling of #SAA2019 in my responses to a recent survey, an email inadvertently FWD'ed to me reveals that I am "involved/engaged, however probably not in the way we [the SAA] would like."

On day 5 of #SINGUSA2019, we analyzed the mtDNA sequences we generated in the lab earlier this week! We also discussed the limits of what DNA can tell us about identity, ancestry, and tribal belonging, and considered issues of tribal sovereignty. @SINGConsortium Ripan Malhi
