boring screenshot but raw GPU tracing speeds seem quite promising at a casual 700x faster than the same thing inside houdini... looks like it should be possible to have interactive renders at 32 samples per pixel or so while adjusting the full lens prescription

focusing various lens designs... managing to trace 2.5 billion rays per second when the samples are turned up a bit 🫧 thanks nvidia thanks opencl thanks wgpu-native

the falls (1980) shot by mike coles/john rosenberg, making the absolute most of a huge flare... from a seemingly non-multicoated lens if the uniform colours of the ghosts are anything to go by

cool to see some work towards GPU OSL lens shaders for blender, with a polynomial optics example! octane already supports this and it'd be interesting to try the same thing there... projects.blender.org/blender/blende…

this is really cool... seeing bloom/glare that's actually the accumulated effect of the lens flaring for every pixel is the dream!

good post about how the pinhole camera model doesn't work so well for wide angle lenses: tangramvision.com/blog/camera-mo…

read this and started salivating... looks like there's some work on doing similar things with more circular vignetted pupils as well as the annular one here (Bauman and Xiao 2010 montana.edu/jshaw/document…)

looks like the ASWF added OpenQMC as a sandbox project the other day, the sample generation library used in Framestore's Freak renderer: github.com/AcademySoftwar… no code yet but will be interesting to see if it's based on Sobol sequences or the more recent blue noise
