Two new birds to the life list over the last few days. Jack Snipe in Ardee, and Goldeneye at Lurgangreen, both Co.Louth. Ridiculously long time to tick Goldeneye but I have been birding in slow motion since I started. 😂Hoping to find a brambling before winter ends.

A male Greater Scaup on Monalty Lough, Carrickmacross, back in December. My first good views of one, smart looking bird when seen well.

The very active and ghostly Siberian Chiffchaff on the outskirts of Dundalk this morning. Also the continuing Ring-billed gull in Blackrock, which was a satisfying life tick considering I have dipped this bird many times. Mad to think of the distances these two have travelled.

Three Greylag Geese at Monalty Lough, Carrickmacross at lunch today. Seeing any geese around these parts is always welcome. One was having a good stretch.

A flock of Linnets have taken up residence in my housing estate over the last few days, bouncing between all the roofs. I suspect they are feeding on recently sown grass seed. Lovely to hear them in the garden.

I’ve been checking a flooded field between Ardee, Co. Louth and the M1 regularly over the last few weeks. I felt like I was wasting my time…until today! Found a Common Crane this evening, walking around looking absolutely mega! Only my second in Ireland. BirdGuides

Common Crane in Ardee, Co.Louth, first time seeing one, and in the locality too, which makes it even better. Nice to also tick a Green Sandpiper in the same field; I had only sound recorded their calls on passive audio recorders previously. Brilliant finds by BMcCloskey

Recorded a roding Woodcock and drumming Snipe at a local bog this evening. It’s like a different world in these places at dusk.

Pleasantly surprised to find this reeling Grasshopper Warbler in Knockabbey, Co.Louth. Not a bird you hear often in this part of Louth.

I have been meaning to share a long soundscape of the Savi's Warbler found by BMcCloskey in May 2024, so here it is. Also featuring some light rain and Sedge Warbler song. The Savi's Warbler sounds a bit distant but still a nice recording I think. youtube.com/watch?v=KnDSq3…

I edited over two years of field recordings from Ardee Bog into a 30 minute soundscape. It is meant to demonstrate how the soundscape of the bog changes with the seasons. Many thanks to Friends of Ardee Bog for assisting me with my recording project. youtube.com/watch?v=eDhfi4…

Been on a bit of a hiatus from birding but had to get out to see the Little Gulls at Soldiers Point in Dundalk. Only seen one today but great to add it to the life/louth list. Was hoping to find a yellow legged and med gull as well today, but no luck.
