It’s Sunday and I was missing Ma’s cooking as per usual. Made alur torkari with cumin/kala jeera. And chili/salt/haldi. I think Bengalis specialize in making the simplest of dishes that are packed with flavor and happy childhood memories.

Made my own Shahi gorom moshla to add to this lamb Kosha mangsho and it turned out yum— hence so many pictures of this beauty from all angles!

A Darfur refugee farmer settled in San Diego taught me how to make the best shattah. For me, it’s more than the rich color and spicy flavor of this chutney. It’s the friendship that blossomed because I learned so much from Fatima and her family.

As most of India celebrates #Diwali, Bengal also turns to the fierce and divine godess Kali. This stunning 1916 photo captures a bahurupi, a traditional folk artist, dressed as Goddess Kali, embodying the spirit of the festival. But who are these bahurupis? A short thread. 1/17

Made a modified garlic rasam with urad dal vadas in it at a friend’s house this week— I think I’ve cooked in all my friends’ kitchens and the best part is to make something that’s close to what I’d make in mine, but using their spices and whatever they have in the fridge👇🏾
