I finally got an opportunity to review the Raleigh's Planning Commission Final Recommendation for the proposed rezoning of Shaw U's parcels. The Equity Analysis is a joke. There's no displacement analysis. Also, no certainty of AH. #ralpol

Housing choice doesn't mean it will be housing choice for those experiencing economic vulnerability or at risk for displacement. Also, the demographic diversity that will be increased, will be the influx of wealthier residents, which increases housing cost and land values. #shaw

1)The commission's recommendation also stated that Shaw U's request was consistent with "Economic Prosperity and Equity." The reason given was because it's a HBCU providing cultural resources for the entire community. So, I went to the 2030 Comprehension Plan for a closer look.

2) The 2030 Comprehension Plan for Raleigh has the audacity to water down equity in the context of development as cultural arts and resources and general economic development and innovation. So, this is the strategic focus? Urban renewal, but leave the arts & culture?#ralpol

3) Let's not kid ourselves into believing that the culture left will be the actual people and their neighborhoods. AA culture will be reduced to street festivals, symbolic gestures, and I suppose the resources the planning commission thinks Shaw has to offer the public. #ralpol

As an equity leader I am appalled by the planning staff's lack of cultural and equity competency. Using the word Housing Choice is deceitful to people who don't understand how urban renewal leads to displacement. At least they weren't stupid enough to use "Fair Housing Choice."

And AAs aren’t the only ones vulnerable to economic displacement by the intense unbalanced development occurring in Raleigh. The singular goal until recent changes on council was growing for new people and young people with $$$, instead of growing for everyone. #ralpol
