I’ve been seeing revival on the ground lately. In individual cases, it seems to come from a desire to know someone who genuinely cares for them, no matter what. They know they are flawed, but they don’t want to be abandoned when they are jobless, sick, or otherwise in trouble.

The hardest word for me to handle cognitively in that Bleak House passage is “wonderful,” because the word today has become yet another superlative of “good.” It takes me a couple of read-throughs to realise Dickens means it as a synonym to “surprising.”
