Would you know what to do if you fell into open water? Fight your instinct to swim straight away and float on your back instead: respectthewater.com #BeWaterAware

Even if your child is a good swimmer, you must supervise them. Half of children who drown can swim. Why not bring them along to meet our crews and Trent MAXI Maxwell on Sunday? ow.ly/hL8450tiN5z #BeWaterAware #swimsafe

If you see someone in danger in water, call 999 & look for a life ring or throwbag. If there isn't one nearby, look for a football or anything else that might help them float. If they go underwater, try to mark where you last saw them on the water's edge. #throwbagthursday

"The heartache, pain and trauma is indescribable." Last year, Watch Manager Dave Irwin unveiled the first throw line and signage board in the NE. It's dedicated to his son Ross, who lost his life in 2016 after falling in the River Wear on a night out: ow.ly/5yMk50tUKtB

Crews from Sunderland attended a kitchen fire yesterday that was made worse by the occupier trying to put it out themselves. Remember, if a fire starts in your home: get out, stay out, call 999. If you cook with hot oil, never fill the pan more than a third full #cooksafe

Four kayakers got into difficulty when one of their kayaks had been holed & was rapidly filling with water. The strong tide meant they couldn't reach safety. Fortunately, they had a means for calling for help so contacted the Coastguard who launched St Davids RNLI to assist them.
