As the debate over the right to read wages, what impact will the alarming increase in book bans have on children’s literacy and furthermore, on children’s mental health? That is the focus of my opening talk this morning at the NYPL Center for Educators and Schools summit on censorship.

In his 4th century BC treatise, “Politics,” Aristotle wrote these still salient words, “In bad government a good man is a bad citizen.” Adding, “He who is a citizen in a democracy will often not be a citizen in an oligarchy.” Heed these words in the coming days.

If you tell me that some people will make it and some people won’t, I will say that’s life. If you tell me that you are intentionally designing a system to ensure that you make it and others don’t, I will say that’s evil.
