One reason for spiralling asylum numbers is we’re no longer part of the EU asylum scheme. People come to UK knowing they won’t be relocated back to the first EU country they entered. No-one will mention this, or push the need for closer involvement in the Euro-wide scheme.

Maybe our new Home Secretary should spend less time whipping up prejudice against people seeking safety and more time doing her job, including addressing delays in our asylum system and the claims backlog created by her predecessors.

Has the @bbc actually analysed Gary Lineker’s tweet? Because it is factually accurate. A lot of the tropes used now by Govt: ‘invasion’, ‘menace’ etc, are pretty similar to those used by nationalist parties in 1930s Germany. Why no analysis? Are BBC history presenters muted too?
