Clean up after your dog and make sure waste is not left near water sources!! Throwing out pet waste into storm drains increases public health risks because pet waste bacteria (E. Coli) drains into nearby waterways.

Reduce the amount of pavement and impervious surface on your property. Brick walks, gravel driveways and porous concrete allow rainwater to run back into the ground to be filtered. Porous surfaces also replenish aquifers!

Store auto parts such as batteries, engine parts, and parts that may have oily or greasy residue on them under cover and off the ground. Rainwater can wash pollutants off these parts and into our stormdrains.

Be careful where you put that lawn fertilizer! Rain or irrigation runoff can wash fertilizer into ponds and streams -- and harm fish and wildlife, cause smelly algae blooms, and affect our drinking water. Learn how to protect our waterways at YourCleanWater.org/lawn

NEVER discharge pool or hot tub water directly into the storm drain. These waters must be collected by a pool company. If you want to discharge them to your yard, be sure to dechlorinate the water with neutralizing chemicals first.

NEVER clean or pressure wash the undercarriage of a vehicles at home. The oil, grease and other pollutants from this activity can contaminate shallow groundwater and also enter the Town's stormwater system. Do this at a car wash which is designed to handle these pollutants!

Avoid liquid chemical spills such as oil, gasoline, antifreeze or paint on paved surfaces. If a liquid chemical spill occurs, it can be cleaned up with kitty litter or sand. Sweep up absorbents and dispose of in the trash.

Pet waste contains bacteria and parasites that get washed to the nearest waterway when it rains. Every time you walk your dog, please: - carry a bag to pick up pet waste, - dispose of waste in a trash can, - never toss anything down a storm drain!

Always store chemicals in leak proof containers inside a building or shed, or under cover away from the rain and snow. Refer to the chemical's safety data sheet for proper storage.

Please don't 'P' on your lawn! Adding fertilizer with phosphorous (P) is illegal in Massachusetts without a soil test stating it is necessary. UMass Amherst offers convenient soil testing options. For more information visit: yourcleanwater.org/lawn/

Thinking about creating a new landscape area? Using pervious landscape materials on your property can be a great way to capture, infiltrate and treat stormwater runoff.
