No Indian polity will be willing to fund actual learning resources for so-called migrants (except maybe Kerala, but I may be wrong) unlike say in France (very good resources) or Germany or even in the Netherlands where English is widely used, but Dutch is widely taught.

This is a major problem that I've also encountered across India. Language teaching is dated and outside of school there exists no formal ways to learn a language. Several linguistically inclined Germans tried to pick-up Telugu and left it because of the lack of material.

It's an assimilated form of Sanskrit jyeṣṭha "older (person)". Interestingly cēṭṭan is listed in the Tamil Lexicon as well, although I've never come across it. dsal.uchicago.edu/cgi-bin/app/ta…

It turns out that in Gulf Arabic, fīlm hindī "Indian film" is an expression meaning "melodramatic, over-the-top", an obvious reference to the exaggerated displays of emotions and expressions in Bollywood movies. Fun (and fitting)! (Hindī of course just means "Indian" in Arabic)

While none of these stats are new (from the 2011 Census, the 2021 Census never happened), it's nice to see the data summarized like this. More people in Tamil Nadu speak English (18.5%) than Hindi (2.1%), which is especially interesting. thehindu.com/news/national/…

Incredible news!! The #Tulu script is finally part of Unicode, meaning that fonts in script can be designed and used on digital devices! Many scripts with much fewer users were part of Unicode, but Tulu's inclusion has dragged on for years and years. hindustantimes.com/cities/bengalu…

Oddly enough, I've heard this term used as self identification in English by Muslims in Pune and Bangalore, former cantonment cities in the Deccan.
