Verdant. Verdant derives from the French word for “green,” vert (pronounced \vehr). It has been used specifically to refer to the colour of plants, meaning “green with growing plants” or “covered in fresh vegetation” as in “verdant fields,” “verdant lawn,” and “verdant hillside.

The visible light spectrum is the segment of the electromagnetic spectrum that the human eye can view. More simply, this range of wavelengths is called visible light. Typically, the human eye can detect wavelengths from 380 (blue) to 700 (red) nanometers.

As sunlight, a combination of all wavelengths, hits an object, some materials will absorb specific wavelengths. The wavelengths that aren't absorbed get reflected. This reflected light then reaches our eyes and makes us perceive the reflecting object as being a particular colour.

Humans see light at the lower end of the visible spectrum, having a longer wavelength, about 740 nm, as red; we perceive light in the middle of the spectrum as green; and see light at the upper end of the spectrum, with a wavelength of about 380 nm, as violet.

A crest is a component of a heraldic display, consisting of the device borne on top of the helm. Originating in the decorative sculptures worn by knights in tournaments and, to a lesser extent, battles, crests became solely pictorial after the 16th century.

Traditionally, signet rings were worn on the pinky finger and used by gentlemen, particularly gentlemen involved with business or politics, as a seal to sign important documents. They can be engraved with the wearers family crest, initials or anything you may have a passion for.

Lapis is often flecked with pyrite giving it a unique golden sparkle. Ensuring your clasp and spacers are also yellow gold will help to highlight those flecks and really bring the stone to life.

It's a stormy, wet and windy day in Canterbury today, although the sun is peeking through right now, the forecast is pretty dire for the rest of the day. Here are three little pieces from the archives for your viewing pleasure.

Sapphires. Such a beautiful and versatile stone. We usually associate this gemstone as blue, it can be any colour of the spectrum except red. Red Sapphire is a Ruby. Here is a collection of recent bespoke pieces we have had the pleasure of creating for our amazing clients.

From the archive. Star Sapphires have a long and fascinating history of being coveted and prized as very special and unique gemstones. Their special feature called "asterism" lends an added mystical element, and many throughout time have felt a special connection to these stones.

Sea glass are naturally weathered pieces of glass, which often have the appearance of tumbled stones. "Sea glass" is physically and chemically weathered glass found on beaches along bodies of salt water. These weathering processes produce natural frosted glass.

Colour of the Year - Viva Magenta is a bright pinkish-purple hue that is both eye-catching and energizing. This instantly brings to mind - Ruby. Other gemstones that invokes the colour of Viva Magenta perfectly is Rubellite Tourmaline, and Rhodolite Garnet

A Hallmark - is a set of component marks applied to articles of the precious metals Gold, Silver, Platinum or Palladium. It means that the article has been independently tested by one of the four Assay Offices. It conforms to all legal standards of purity (fineness).

Naturally black pearls are from the Tahitian family of gems. Black Tahitian pearls get their colour naturally and come from the French Polynesian waters. Naturally coloured "black" pearls aren't black, but have hues of colours, such as grey, purple, blue, or green.
