everytime i’ve asked a spiritual practitioner they never had a clear answer for me. but i’ve found researching a little at a time helps me. Hoodoo, Espiritsmo, & 21 Divisions are my cultural ties. I’ve yet to commit to any.

I love it and it’s just who I am. It’s partly why I’m an interfaith minister rooted in Africana religious traditions. It reflects my ancestral lineages & my path for this life incarnation which included engagement in multiple religious traditions across the Black Atlantic.

I came into Orisha devotion practicing both Lukumi and Isese Lagba. My maternal line were apart of the Ogun cult centuries ago. And then I have my Hoodoo heritage which my people practiced alongside/with Islam and Christianity.

And then there’s Espiritismo Cruzado and Palo (though I’m not scratched) because of my very present and active Kongo ancestry. When we let go of borders, we see many of us in the Diasporic are multi-ethnic people and our religious paths reflect those realities and histories.

I think it’s important to understand that these religious traditions are autonomous universes of their own replete w/ their own cosmologies & frameworks which shouldn’t be reduced or conflated but respected and honored w/ care.

Working under the tutelage of experienced and honorable elders can help folks navigate all of this w/ discernment and care. 🙏🏿🕯️🙌🏿
