May is almost here, so y’all know what that means... time to create that May budget. Here are some refresher tips for you beginner or backsliding (lol) budgeters:

Create a new budget for every month. Start out by writing out your basic necessity expenses (rent, utilities, etc.) then list our your savings and debt payments (credit card, student loans) then you can move on to your “wants” (eating out, shopping, etc.)

3. Reconcile your budget at the end of every month. This means tracking your actual expenses and compare to your planned expenses. Reconciling will allow you to see how well you stick to your budget as well as allow you to adjust your budget to accurately reflect your expenses.

4. Review your budget and adjust accordingly. For example, if you’ve noticed that you’ve been under budget in a certain category for a consistent couple of months, it might make sense to adjust and reduce the budget for that category to a more accurate amount.

One of the mistakes I made as a new business owner was co-mingling my accounts. Any payments or purchase made on behalf your business should be made with business funds/cards. Even if the money comes from an investment from yourself. Deposit funds in your biz acct and then pay!
