Went out with the @Taipei_Neolibs gang today to check out some art about the future of the body. This was probably my favorite piece. "Graham" has a body that has been designed to withstand auto collisions:

Noah Smith 🐇🇺🇸🇺🇦🇹🇼 The "polycrisis" is basically a war over Taiwan. That's the only scenario of global significance where outcomes diverge radically based on contingency. What we're seeing now is signaling in the lead-up, demonstrating that the parties understand the gravity of the situation.

Taiwan is the opposite of a risk hedge in the US-China relationship, despite the best intentions of some on both sides to make it so. New post on the forbidden platform, also includes the geopolitical significance of the TikTok ban. tinyurl.com/mr2ebbxm

When is the global non-aligned movement going to realize that it is actually aligned into energy producers and consumers? The US isn't a net importer, but this is going to kill Pakistan. edition.cnn.com/2023/04/08/eco…

How does Politico write an article like this without any Taiwanese sources? Because I don't think "Is China a paper tiger?" would be the way they'd criticize Colby. Politico is writing about this as if it were a domestic issue.

Al Jazeera had a really interesting article this week by Jordyn Haime about Taiwan's marijuana community and those advocating for a more progressive approach to the drug from the government aljazeera.com/economy/2023/4…

Great reporting by Steven Crook on the sad story of Bert Salt, a UK retiree who lived in Taiwan for 13 years until his death at age 88 but was never able to become a resident despite the fact that his daughter has been a resident in Taiwan for decades. taipeitimes.com/News/feat/arch…

New in CommonWealth Magazine: Everyone agrees that Taiwan is in demographic trouble, yet the government isn't organized for any sort of coherent response. That could change with a straightforward bureaucratic reshuffle. english.cw.com.tw/article/articl…

Taiwan's real estate tax is a scam. "Professors from National Chengchi University and Academia Sinica found that the wealthiest 10 percent in Taiwan held over 60 percent of national wealth, and that their share has steadily increased" from 2004 to 2020." english.cw.com.tw/article/articl…

Thanks Paul Huang for an excellent, but sobering assessment of Taiwan's military preparedness. According to Paul, the problems go far beyond just quantitative. "My priority is to first fix the way the military is run, and then you can think about increasing the money."
