Di Siemon: “Over 80% of the Year 8 maths curriculum requires multiplicative thinking, yet around a third of students are still thinking additively in Year 8 (Levels 1 to 3). New data says this is higher (55%) for low ses schools” #MAVcon

The story of Jamie who within a year of being taught conventional algorithms had lost all creativity and self belief in her maths is shocking. An important and thought provoking reading!

#ElemMathChat The most successful teachers we have studied are those that teach to big ideas instead of methods. Work out the big ideas in your grade, and for each one find rich, deep activities. The methods come out as you teach to big ideas, that give enduring understanding.

Students engaged in the smartie box challenge today from James Russo. It was amazing to see students taking ownership of their learning and utilise our classroom resources to solve this challenging task. #maths #studentagency #challenge #learning #learningpit

If Ss have access and make their own numerical relationships, then this seems like a comfortable place to start. There’s a difference between supporting Ss with correct mathematical language and showing them your way to solve the problem.

Used the Little Engine That Could book to launch teaching time. Ss had to recreate the train track (number line) of 60 tracks and then use clues to work out where the Little Engine stopped. Lots of peer teaching and problem solving. #maths #challengingtasks #teaching

A fantastic action completed by some of our year 3 students as part of their inquiry into palm oil. They have put posters around our school to inform our school community. #inquiry #action #inquirycycle #sustainability @kjinquiry

This lesson from ABC Education is concerning. If you bought a $5.95 muffin with $20, would you calculate change using a subtraction algorithm? We work so hard to shift parent attitudes to focus on understanding, yet it reinforces old-school approaches education.abc.net.au/home#!/media/3…

Remember that seemingly harmless statements about math (“Math never made sense to me either.”) can do lasting harm to our kids. #iteachmath
