Here’s what a passport looked like in the 13th century. This one belonged to St. Jacek (Hyacinth), who brought the Dominican order to Poland.

Met him in a Radisson hotel out near O’Hare in the late 1980s. (That’s me on the far right.) Was nice as could be. I was never a wrestling fan, but I was a Hulk Hogan fan. RIP.

The Chicago Cubs' strategy of pitching behind in the count and failing to score runners in scoring position with no outs is not paying off, weirdly.

Humanity owes a lot to Nicaea, with its ousias and substantias and embattled uses of hypostasis. Persona implies relation and relatability rather more strongly than our thinned down anthropologies care to admit, which makes it hard to explain why we are all in this together.

Boos raining down at Wrigley. Chicago Cubs have the second best record in MLB right now but fans are staring into the abyss. Bats completely AWOL. Deadline trades flopped. Bullpen suddenly stinks on ice. The team looks resigned and defeated. Hoping not to lose. Zero fire; zero fun.

And that’s where we find ourselves today, as summer wanes, on the day after the Transfiguration: setting our faces to follow the Lord, in train with Peter, coming down from the mountain so that we may ascend another. thecatholicthing.org/2025/08/07/com…

The Cubs continue to have tragically bad ABs with runners in scoring position. Happ got ahead 1-0 and then watched three fastballs and took a seat. Just brutal.

I remember Vasgersian, back in the '90s when he was doing games for the Brewers, calling a Jeromy Burnitz home run by busting into a full-throated rendition of Pearl Jam: "Jeremy spoke in class today!" Been a fan of his ever since.
