Just read that Derek Fowlds has died. Excellent in Yes Minister & Yes Prime Minister. And had one of the best lines in sitcom history when they discussed newspaper readers on Yes Prime Minister.

On Brexit Day, this is the chart that makes me angry Soon after Cameron was elected in 2010, just 1% of UK adults thought EU was a top issue The unwanted, divisive & expensive #Brexit saga was manufactured from nothing by his government for the benefit of the Conservative party

Ben Olken's notes on his "Epic Failures" -- research projects that died. A good reminder that for every polished paper we see, there are a lot of failed paper attempts. (Part of MIT's new 2nd-year PhD class on how to write a paper, which I want to take!) economics.mit.edu/files/18768

1/N. Short thread on T-Mlobile/Sprint merger. There were 2 theories: (A) It's a 4-to-3 merger that will lower competition and increase markups. (B) The new merged entity will be able to take on the industry leaders ATT and Verizon. (A) and (B) make clear predictions.

Tweestorming a rough chronology of economics since World War II Caveats: 1. It’s not meant at introducing econ ideas but primarily at helping econ undergrads embed ideas & tools seen in micro/macro courses in specific times & places before going deeper in some episodes

Overheard: The one thing we've learned from this crisis is that if the Martians invaded earth, our first response would be to lower interest rates.

Preliminary results of Spain's seroprevalence study on random sample of the population (>30,000 households, >60,000 people) representative at provincial level. Prevalence of antibodies anti SARS-CoV-2: 5% nationally, large regional variation (highest Madrid, 11%, others <2%)

The Covid-19 recession is the strangest recession in living memory For starters, it is the most unequal recession - like the virus, decimating some and untouching others.

Dear #TradeTwitter, HELP! I have found 500+ HTS-10 products... (1) on List 1 ($34B, 25% US tariffs on China) (2) NOT on any Federal Register notice of product EXCLUSIONS yet (3) starting March 2020, 25% Section 301 tariffs were no longer collected. Any explanations? 🤓🤔

Here is a snapshot of the largest producers of vaccines. Much more supply is in the pipeline but all countries will need to share. It is essential to vaccinate the most vulnerable in the world *now* for the benefit of everyone. The pandemic is not over until it is over everywhere
