We deployed a #WBAT #mooring (autonomous #simrad echosounder) to observe pelagic fish activity in relation to #Waddenzee at the Dutch - German nautical border for #Swimway project. Located near beautiful Groningen city the #Westereems  inlet connects North Sea to Wadden Sea.

On our way to #Ices coordinated international #BlueWhiting acoustic survey, started on beautiful sunny day. We will cover large spawning aggregations along the shelf edge west of Scotland and Ireland. Main team is from WUR Marine & DTU aqua. Follow: bluewhitingsurvey.blogspot.com/?m=1

We are calibrating our #Simrad EK80 wideband echosounders and ME70 multibeam. All going smoothly near Saint Michael's Mount at #CORNWALL. Soon we will also finish our tests with the fish and plankton nets and set out to open ocean for bluewhiting acoustic survey.

After departure from Cork-Ireland, we are on our acoustic transects along porcupine bank since Monday. No blue whiting backscatter yet. But ring net samples from surface scattering layer keep some of us busy. The catch is dominated by #krill #jellyfish and some lantern fish.

Genetic technologies will revolutionize fisheries science! If you are student doing #marine science keep your eyes on this field. #eDNA now providing quantitative estimates of Pacific hake in the open ocean. royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/pdf/10.109…

Very good progress on Porcupine bank, acoustic backscatter from huge blue whiting aggregations, good catch for biological sampling and very nice weather ( so far!). #BlueWhiting acoustic survey going well.

Almost entire Northeast Atlantic blue whiting stock migrates and forms huge spawning aggregations, tens of nautical miles from the continental slope, at about 400 meters depth.  One of the most fascinating ecological phenomena I have ever seen. Check out my colleagues blog.

Zooplankton, cornerstone of marine food web and key elements of  global carbon cycle. Fish surveys provide opportunity to study them. While our objective is to quantify #BlueWhiting spawning stock, we also collect valuable zooplankton data including broadband acoustic backscatter

A month ago observing blue whiting at west of UK during their spawning aggregation. Now in the #NorwegianSea some adults seems to be already back to their homeland. Some photos from IESNS survey 2022 targeting spring spawning herring and juvenile bluewhiting ca 70° N on RV #DANA
