Every social-emotional learning program (SEL) program should begin by attending to (1) everything that harms the wellbeing of students at school and (2) everything that harms the wellbeing of adults at school--including racism, heterosexism, and other forms of oppression.

The hitch in positive behavior programs that focus on rewarding "good" behavior: research shows that educators interpret behavior differently across race. If we don't fix that, at least part of what we're rewarding with these programs is whiteness.

Before discipline and suspension, what if we asked... Were there social/emotional stressors? Were there communication stressors? Were there environmental/sensory stressors? And last but not least, was the response more about the teacher’s insecurity than the student’s behavior?

If this can happen to a president with secret service, if this can happen in Parkland with a cop assigned to our campus, if this can happen in Uvalde with hundreds of police. STOP TALKING ABOUT GOOD GUYS WITH GUNS AND START DOING SOMETHING ABOUT THE GUNS.
