"Ultimately, I believe in treating others how you would like to be treated, especially in times of crisis. Be kind, engage with fellow human beings and do what you can to make a positive difference." ❤️

Unsurprising and depressing. Hittite, Sumerian, and (most) Akkadian axed from SOAS. Akkadian and Sumerian will only be taught at Oxbridge. Hittite not even there. Don’t blame SOAS, which has had to axe much over the years. Blame the marketisation of higher education.

Warning to #academics: be careful who you hire to translate your articles for publication or you risk ending up with the pile of nonsense I'm currently trying to polish after it was rejected by a journal. You buy cheap, you buy twice... #xl8

I am shortly going to have to start clearing my late father's house, and among his possessions are 100s of books in the field of French cultural studies (particularly interwar period). Does anyone know a library that might be interested in giving a new home for these?

Can 'Only Lovers Left Alive' be read as a film about academics fed up of the changes taking place in the state of the world and the 'academe', but who, in the end, succumb to their nature and take on PhD students?

Peer review gets so much hate on here, so I just wanted to share this experience: I recently enjoyed reviewing a good article, I think I helped the author to make it even sharper, and when it won a prize in its field I couldn't have been prouder if I had written it myself.

Had a good convo abt (so-called) independent scholars. I think many fac don't get the institutional access/support we need. Not sure profs shd tell grad students they can keep researching no matter their job unless they plan to help, e.g. by sponsoring them as a visiting scholar.

It’s bad business, it doesn’t hold us accountable for our choices, and in its wilful obfuscation it is a practice that is disrespectful not only to us, but to readers as well. theguardian.com/books/2021/sep…
