This šŸ‘‡šŸ¼ is one way to recruit fresh talent, retain it & use their out-of-Trust experience to innovate in-house. Self-propagating. Supportive. At a time where some Trusts make it hard or impossible to get essential study leave, so good to see others being proactive like below.

Wow, what a fabulous idea & clever way to recruit & RETAIN clinicians! It's becoming increasingly difficult to work 9 GP sessions, but mix it up with a couple of sessions of something else equally rewarding & worthwhile... Worth exploring in 1° and 2° care? #TeamGP? NHS Orkney?

Last night was privileged to join the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow as Regional Councillor (North of Scotland); delighted to be serving alongside my good friend @MikeMckirdy and fellow new councillor Martha Quinn. Hope to support the College’s continuing quest to be an effective force for good.

Rural Surgical Generalism is still possible in a 21st century UK hospital. The #RuralSurgicalFellowship by NHS Education for Scotland (NES) was fantastic preparation for my job in NHSShetland where operative responsibilities include orthopaedics, urology and full general surgery services. See šŸ‘‡

I'm delighted to be back volunteering at Chitokoloki, Zambia. Considerations of risk have a very different feel as a parent. Here is my rather personal reflection on our journey here and dealing with the uncertainties of life: fergussonsinzambia.blogspot.com/2024/03/certai…

Our 2024 conference will be in #Shetland, 11-13th Sept. Attendees will access multispecialty updates pertinent to #rural surgical practice, the great company of #surgicalgeneralists and sights such as Mousa Broch, Scotland’s best preserved example of this iron-age dwelling type.

Delighted to see two #Shetland colleagues being honoured with an OBE- Dr Pauline Wilson FRCP and Mr Gordon McFarlane FRCS. Richly deserved for their long and exceptional service to #ruralhealthcare and to the #Shetland community in particular.

Congrats to long-standing Viking Surgeons Association member Mr Gordon McFarlane who was awarded OBE in the New Year’s Honour List, recognising a career’s worth of exemplary service in #globalhealth and #ruralsurgery; latterly 20 years of superb service provision (& development) in Shetland.

Calling Consultant Anaesthetists with a heart for rural communities! Are you interested in the challenge of generalist anaesthetist practice in the beautiful Shetland Islands? Huge contract flexibility could easily support clinical interests elsewhere. apply.jobs.scot.nhs.uk/Job/GetJobAdve…

šŸŽ‚ Possibly the worst reason to vote for the Leadbeater Bill: a "birthday present" for a celebrity backer whose own experience ("weeks to live" at one point after Jan 2023 diagnosis) undermines the Bill's main "safeguard" (only for those expected to die within 6mo). #NotThisBill

After careful consideration, I have decided to vote against the Assisted Dying Bill at Third Reading. This is not a decision I have made lightly, and I respect there are different views on this important topic. I explain my reasons in detail in the attached note.

Creating an absolute right to a state-assisted suicide (if eligibility criteria met) generates a profoundly unfair & dangerous choice for the terminally ill, while we inadequately fund the alternative of palliative care that honours life until natural death. The public agree šŸ‘‡
