Sam: The ECHR standardises rights across the modern democracies and gives individuals a mechanism to keep Govts honest (which we have sometimes slipped from), but its no panacea. Its plausible to argue that ECHR now exceeding its brief, but there are better ways to tackle that.

I see the Conservative Party now want far more parliamentary scrutiny of international treaties. Could have sworn three months ago that they were still blacklisting people like myself for having opinions like that. My opinions haven't incidentally changed. More is needed.

Everybody knows the Conservative Party in government would have handled Chagos Islands exactly as Labour have. Because they did. And Farage can bluster but populists ultimately cause chaos then have to accept realities as well. Again, we saw it happen.

Thanks Bill. As I've said before, I don't worry about the bots - that's just cyber-fluff. But I sometimes use them as a hook for my own point that 'readers' might value. (Though I do worry a bit about 'Disgruntled Ant' - always looking for ways to ease his disgruntlement.)

Watched episode 1 of #show trial on BBC 1. I am usually very critical of crime procedurals especially those involving solicitors. I am really happy to say that I was impressed. The script and the acting were superb and for once that was an accurate portrayal of a crim solicitor.

Conservative ministers spent years promising to "stand up for our history", while presiding over devastating cuts to museums & galleries. If we're worried about the "trashing" of "our history", we need to care as much about museums as we do about statues. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

The idea that a peace process, which affirmed Northern Ireland's place in the UK, ended the "armed struggle" and required the consent of a majority in the North to any changes in its status, constituted "surrendering to the IRA" is just unutterably crass.

A year into Gaza war... high time for statements like these. Thank you Trey Yingst A number of journalists have been killed in Lebanon as well, they need protection too.

Well worth reading this beautiful letter from a family judge. Mother had wanted contact with her estranged children but they had fiercely opposed it. Must be heartbreaking to hear such cases but the judge's compassion and empathy shine through.
