This is always a great event, #EuropeanResearchersNight in Reykjavík yesterday. Opportunity for scientists to interact directly with the public ❤️❤️ I was there for my astronomy club, but set up a seismometer so people could create an earthquake at the Veðurstofa Íslands / Icelandic Met Office booth 😊

Í kvöld eiga tunglið og Mars svo náið stefnumót að rauða plánetan hverfur á bak við tunglið. Nátthrafnar og árrisulir geta fylgst með myrkvanum sem hefst um klukkan 04:30 í fyrramálið og stendur yfir í klst. Tvíeykið verður því mjög þétt saman í fyrramálið. Horfið til himins! 🔭

Gullfalleg ljósadýrð á morgunhimninum. Glitský í 70 stiga frosti í heiðhvolfinu, mynduð með hjálp viðbótarvatnsgufu frá sprengigosinu í Hunga Tonga. Tjékk it át!

While keeping a close eye on #Askja caldera, let’s not forget just how amazing it is to have access to free satellite data, that has enough temporal and spatial coverage to deliver 6 images in the span of 10 days! #sentinel2 #landsat8 #landsat9 ❤️ USGS Landsat ❤️ Copernicus EU

Left: Earthquakes in Katla (overlain by Mýrdalsjökull glacier) this morning at station Austmannsbunga. Right: Map showing earthquake locations. Blue lines indicate water divides and small circles indicate cauldrons, i.e. geothermal activity. Veðurstofa Íslands / Icelandic Met Office #volcanomonitoring

BIG NEWS IN PHYSICS! The first ever evidence for light year long gravitational waves that *might* be due to merging supermassive black holes. All possible thanks to pulsar timing arrays, explained in this video 👇 #GravitationalWaves #NANOGrav #pulsars

My favourite fact about the BIG gravitational wave news, is that it was only made possible because we finally know the precise position of Jupiter! 🤯 Thanks to chrislintott for flagging this cool fact #pulsartimingarray #nanograv #GravitationalWaves NASA's Juno Mission

Andri Yrkill fréttamaður var í miðjum fréttalestri um jarðskjálftahrinuna klukkan tíu í morgun þegar einn þeirra reið yfir. Þórunn Elísabet, annar stjórnenda Morgunvaktarinnar á Rás 1, gleymdi að loka fyrir hljóðnemann og lét þreytu sína með jarðskjálftahrinuna í ljós.

Everyone going on summer holiday in Iceland these days. Fagradalsfjall has other plans. Beautiful fringes showing where a dyke is intruding in the crust between Fagradalsfjall and Keilir. 18 cm deformation in direction of the satellite and over 6.000 earthquakes and counting

Since the #eruption began, the #earthquakes have moreorless stopped, and been replaced by seismic tremor. This is the incoherent background “hum” caused both by magma moving beneath the ground and venting at the surface - seen mainly at higher frequency (blue & green 2nd plot).
