#OnThisDay 10 July 1914, the 76m SS Invermore ran aground at Brig Harbour Point, Labrador. Built at Glasgow, Scotland in 1881 as SS Dromedary, renamed Invermore in 1909 when purchased by Reid Newfoundland Co. as part of the Alphabet Fleet servicing Labrador.

#OTD 15 July 1954, the 32m Canadian wooden transport ship, MV Marvita wrecked on Cape Ballard north of Cape Race. All 8 crew members survived on ex rum runner and customs cutter built in 1930.

#OnThisDay #OTD 17 July 1897 the British cargo ship SS Baltimore City was wrecked at Flat Island in the Straits of Belle Isle while on a voyage from Montreal to Manchester. The Telegram reported on July 20.

#OTD, 23 July 1947, 4 days after SS Meigle, the 125m British cargo steamship Amberton wrecked at Western Head near St. Shott’s while en route to Liverpool from Quebec with a load of Lumber. The crew of 29 were removed on July 26 after salvage attempts.

#OnThisDay, 26 July 1942, the 137m MV Empire Rainbow was torpedoed by U-607&U-704 east of Flemish Cap. The crew of 47 were picked up and landed at St. John’s. Empire Rainbow was completed in May 1941 for the British as catapult armed merchant (CAM), which launched an aircraft.

#OnThisDay #OTD, 8 Aug 1922, HMCS Raleigh’s officers went on a short fly fishing trip to Forteau, Labrador and ran aground at Point Amour lighthouse. 11 of 797 crew were lost. The ship’s captain and navigator were later found responsible. shipwrecksnl.ca/wreck/hms-rale…

#OnThisDay, 29 August 1916, SS White Sea wrecked on Shag Rock, east of St. Mary´s Bay. The 85m British cargo steamship, built in 1904, was headed to the Sharpness, UK from Montreal with a cargo of timber.

#OnThisDay, 30 August 1918, FV Elsie Porter and FV Potentate were two fishing schooners sunk by German submarine U 117 on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. The attached was reported in the Evening Telegram 2 September 1918 on page 4.

#OnThisDay, 1 Sept 1929, SS Ole Aarvold wrecked near Cape Pine, the Graveyard of the Atlantic. The 57m Norwegian cargo steamship, built in 1919, was sailing from Twillingate to Harbour Buffet to load fish when she ran aground in heavy fog. There were no casualties.

#OnThisDay, 6 September 1909, SS Laurentian ran aground at Mistaken Point in the ‘Graveyard of the Atlantic’. This 122m British ocean liner, built in 1872, was part of the Allen Line. The photo is of her sister ship SS Sardinian.

#onthisday, 7 September 1954, SS City of Philadelphia ran aground near Cape Race on her maiden voyage with no loss of life. She was a part of the Inman Line operating passenger/merchant ships between Liverpool, New York and, and Philadelphia.

#OnThisDay, 17 Sept. 1897, SS Rhodora ashore at Horn Head, north of Cape Race in dense fog and a total loss. The 25 crew were put to sea in boats, and picked up by SS Grand Lake. The 92m British cargo ship, built in 1881, was headed to Philadelphia from Boston, Lincolnshire, UK.
