I’m very grateful to have been able to lecture on art in the little ice age today, and how it can help environmental historians understand past climates and ecologies, and thanks to UC_DAAP I was able to include physical art 🎨

🗣️ Attention! Fritz is 1,010 pounds today! He reached this milestone five months earlier than Fiona did. She was 1 year, 11 months and 1 day old and Fritz is currently 1 year, 6 months and five days old! Both hippo is are growing big and strong and doing well! 🥳🤩

I’m doing research for a conference paper on the environmental history of peacocks, and it’s amazing that only six people have looked at this book from 1666 since it was digitized, which feels very cool I might be the only one to read the section on peacocks in centuries 🦚

Fun facts for today: in 1586, Edward Alde recommended using peacock blood mixed with ginger to cure a hawk’s throat problems, and in 1593 Thomas Tusser described the Turkey and peacock (both introduced species to England) as “ill neighbors” #EnvironmentalHistory #AnimalHistory

Very excited to announce that next year I will serve as a Curatorial Fellow at Johns Hopkins’ Stern Center for the History of the Book! I will spend part of the year researching the afterlives & continued use of medieval books in the early modern period.

I have not one, but TWO formal citations of Martha Stewart in this article Im working on and hoping to publish in an actual journal (I’m citing two of her blog entries talking about the peafowl and pheasants she adopted in an article on the hisotry of peacocks in England)
