encountering this single paragraph from Jonathan Shedler changed everything - kind of a telos I strive to hold re: my personal development & was incredibly helpful as I started toward becoming a therapist, wondering what the hell mental health even means, i return to it often

"the skillful therapist titrates the affective 'temperature' of the sessions, striving to keep it just 'warm' enough for the patient to truly experience his feelings without being intolerably flooded or overstimulated" - Sublette & Novick (2004).

Qualitative analysis is hard, complicated, and often frustrating. But it is also invigorating, immersive, and exciting. Losing yourself in other people's lives and stories, making connections, and stringing them together is immeasurably rewarding.

This is why it's important to make it clear to clients that therapy is not necessarily always about feeling better. That can be a byproduct of it, but not the main goal.

Is this government blind, stupid, idiotic, or simply uncaring?

This thread is particularly important when considering the pressure of working in a health service that wants results quickly.

Powerful words that apply both to me and the clients I work with. We must face and work through that which we tend to avoid in ourselves and our lives.
