Letter grades aren't the issue. They can be redefined as gradations of quality vs the traditional %-based increments that average old/new evidence. The assessment practices that produce grades/levels are far more important than the symbols themselves. #GFIO #ATAssessment #sblchat

Here I will share my lesson plans for my students who will not be coming to school for the next two weeks. These plans were developed with my friend @pennykittle , as well as from input from some of my ELA colleagues at Magnolia High School. But before I share, some thoughts:

This pandemic has already revealed that: - schools are so much more than just schools. - many people now realize how tough it is to be a teacher and that teachers are grossly underpaid. - teachers are irreplaceable and essential to learning and education. #homeschooling

#ELMagChat What if ā€œgradingā€ shifted from Letter Grades or Percentages to profiles of performance based on developmental/proficiency continua, that are independent of Grade Levels and Age? Think of colored belts in karate and the Red Cross scale for swimming.

Lesson idea: have students adapt from the graphic below. E.g. advice from a dog; advice from the ocean; advice from a musician, etc. Brainstorm your own list. Once you have a list, pick one and write. (My apologies: I do not know the source of the chart).

Moving to online teaching is a lot of work, not a pivot. Here’s a thread of tasks, mini units or sequences I’ve created for various Eng courses for use online. Please check for grade/level appropriateness. I hope I can make someone’s life a little easier. Please share. 1/11

@jkirk___ I am trying something different-we are having a class discussion about phones as tools and distractions, then students are writing their own policy for me to sign off on. I’ll be honest-not sure if it will work yet but we have had good discussions so far. docs.google.com/presentation/d…
