I've been waiting for an update to this study for a long time. It confirms in AI a trend happening across science & tech fields: China is gaining share in elite research, and the US is beginning to lose attractiveness among top talent. A few relevant stories 🧵ed below.

A lot to reflect upon in latest AI Talent Tracker from MacroPolo. The big talent pool of 🇨🇳. The attractiveness of 🇺🇸. The weak position of 🇪🇺. The no-show of 🇷🇺.

An analysis by South China Morning Post shows that “86% of goals set in Made in China 2025 have been achieved, with some others likely to be completed later this year or next. Meanwhile some of the targets like EV have been well surpassed.” scmp.com/news/china/sci…

“The price decline has more to do with huge supply ramp-up than with lower demand for magnets. We focuses on what appears to be Chinese suppliers’ role in averting a supply crunch and its implications for the global cleantech supply chain.” Great piece AJ Cortese Amy Ouyang

Although China set a higher growth target than we expected in March, reality is dictating that the country’s growth will decline to closer to the 4.5% that we had anticipated. See our latest Macro Outlook on the constraints China’s economy faces in 2H2024: macropolo.org/analysis/2h202…

I've gone through the financials for automakers representing ~70% of China's NEV production. Contrary to popular belief, NEVs are profitable in aggregate, with the lionshare of the gross margin and profits concentrated with BYD and CATL.
