George Wallace stood on schoolhouse steps and faced no repercussions for trying to block integration. One of our few Latino senators tries to ask a question of a cabinet secretary over whom he has oversight responsibility, and is placed in handcuffs on the ground. Shameful.

As we confront horrific political violence in Minnesota, I write simply to thank all those who speak up for their community. Whether you speak in an official position or on the streets, thank you and please stay safe today and every day.

No one who claimed things merited troop deployment will acknowledge that thousands gathered safely together in Kansas City and many other places today, using their rights to voice constitutionally protected dissent. I appreciate y’all and your voices. Keep speaking up.

The Kansas City Health Department does vital work to promote healthcare access for children and families, to prevent the spread of disease, and to save lives. That work, which relies on already awarded grants essential to the provision of healthcare, must and will now continue.

I don’t care what the polls say. We should never abandon or marginalize any class of our fellow people. Healthcare decisions should be made by families, individuals, and their providers, not by the social moment. Saddened by the action today out of the Supreme Court.
