Outside UCU on Friday HEC members were greeted by a lobby of members drawn from the diversity of our membership. This included retired, disabled & casualised colleagues all of whom care deeply about UCU & democracy. Constructive & friendly! (Including cute baby + dogs) . 1/

Many HEC members spoke to the lobby. As an HEC vice-chair I did too - our place is as much with members & on picket lines as it is in posh negotiation rooms or in conversations with VCs. We should always be proud to be with & represent members. 2/

UCU HQ staff - like us - are unionised workers & respectful of the lobby. Sadly mgmt had installed a small metal barrier to ensure members stayed out. Electronic door locks inside which are rarely used were on. Then these were turned off after the lobby dispersed 3/

Our members can be trusted to have adult conversations. This is OUR union Union reps & leaders shouldn't mock or be afraid of members. We shouldn't support physical or virtual barriers to keep union members out. Accountability is key & dissent is healthy in a trade union. 4/
