One of the ways industry gets away with this deception is by casting a wide, muddy web of confusion. As others have said, it’s the tobacco/ global warming playbook all over again.

The bill was hardly radical—because our nat’l resources dep’t already had an OFFICIAL PRACTICE of not using neonics. So this bill just reinforced an existing practice.

No secret why: during a hearing CropLife America lobbyist testified publicly that passing any bills that *mention neonics by name* would set a dangerous precedent.

It passes through the House with some grumbling from industry. We expect it to die when it gets to MN’s State Senate (more pro-industry,) but when the bill comes up on the floor, EVERY SINGLE senator votes for it.

Looks like we’ll get the bill passed after all! It’s through both the House and Senate. All that’s left is a signature from the Governor. But then, there’s a conference between House and Senate leadership behind closed doors. And somehow, the bill gets cut.

We know that industry lobbyists were caught off-guard by the Senate vote & therefore didn’t have a chance to brief the senators. So for once policymakers voted their conscience, rather than following industry talking points.

This bill should be law by now. And this is just one example of democracy getting overturned by lobbying pressure. Voters are concerned and the science keeps getting clearer and more grim—but our policies don’t reflect that.
