Today I mourn the passing of Joseph Ratzinger, who took the name Benedict XVI as Pope. I had the honour of meeting with him shortly after his election. He was an erudite, holy and brave pastor who served the People of God conscientiously throughout his long life.

It’s understandable that Abp. Ganswein wishes to protect Pope Benedict’s historical legacy and for him to position himself as the standard bearer, but judgements need time and perspective. It will be decades before we can properly assess the Ratzinger papacy.
