I had a chance yesterday to tour Covestro R&D labs and how its $40 million investment will be coming together in the next year or so. The company develops and makes a lot of common items using its polyurethane "magic," as one R&D leader said. bizj.us/1qlyo5

Fall is the best. Just ask Virginia Woolf, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Anne Shirley. I've always been glad to live in a world with Octobers.

This is the second week we've had to live without the great WCBS Newsradio 88. I wrote a column about why its loss is felt far beyond the tri-state region — and why the decline of local radio news is a bad thing, in NY, Pittsburgh and elsewhere. bizj.us/1qlzx3

Things are moving fast and furious this week over the U.S. Steel/Nippon Steel acquisition. Here's what happened overnight: More pledges from Nippon Steel over governance of the Pittsburgh steelmaker: bizj.us/1qm07q $X

Breaking: U.S. Steel CEO David Burritt told The Wall Street Journal in an interview that the steelmaker would have to close the Mon Valley Works and leave Pittsburgh HQ if the Nippon Steel doesn't go through. Here's the latest on $X bizj.us/1qm07s

I've updated this story a couple of times, and the most recent update that will be published soon will have United Steelworkers' comment about Burritt's remarks and Nippon Steel's pledge.

My bingo card did not have "cross the Ohio, Mon and Allegheny rivers, get stuck in traffic near PNC Park and go downtown" in a commute that features none of these.

I can't believe it's been 23 years. Even now, the loss is staggering. I paid my respects over the weekend in Washingtonville, New York, near where I lived that day, to the heroes and ordinary citizens who we lost in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania. #neverforget

What many don't know about 9/11: it's still killing people, volunteers and the workers who responded to the Trade Center and people in the dust cloud. It's killed at least 6,781 people in the past 23 years. There's a monument to them in Washingtonville, NY, too.

Earlier this week I stopped in a place where gasoline is $2.99 a gallon full serve, and it's a magical land called New Jersey. And even in the Hudson Valley of New York I saw gasoline for $3.03 a gallon. Can't remember the last time that happened.

Just released documents detail how Nippon Steel courted United Steelworkers behind the scenes as it worked to get approval for $14.9B U.S. Steel acquisition. bizj.us/1qm214

You may not know americanair has a major heavy-maintenance base at Pittsburgh International Airport. I've been there before, but last Thursday I got another look inside why it's growing and what it's future will be. bizj.us/1qm339

The first big story I ever covered was the untimely death of A. Barlett Giamatti, the MLB commissioner who had 8 days earlier banned Pete Rose from baseball. It was a big story everywhere, but in Connecticut it was huge because Giamatti had been the beloved president of Yale, too

Just got disconnected in a conference call before it was to begin. The Internet issues that I've heard about today, they're real. I wasn't even on the Internet but an actual phone line.

Great to see Caribou, Maine, on the national weather map, where it belongs, always. That weather service station was five doors down from me when I lived in Caribou.

This doesn't happen often: Where I live in Pittsburgh is actually four degrees colder than Caribou, Maine (!) and even eight degrees colder than just outside New York City where I used to live.
