There's an important piece today on the Telegraph website by National Trust Director General, Hilary McGrady on the impact of the lockdown on nature conservation & the sort of recovery we need, when the recovery comes. bit.ly/2KRjxjZ 1/

"We must learn from the last financial crisis and opt for renewal over mere recovery.... Delivering green infrastructure will create new jobs and makes economic sense – and there have been encouraging signs from Government." 2/

But although ministers have said good things about a green recovery, the government needs to support the work of conservation charities if it is to deliver its 25 year environment plan & tackle climate change. These charities have been hit hard by the lockdown. 3/

There have been bespoke programmes for other sectors, but nothing so far for conservation charities. This is a govt genuinely committed to addressing the climate & nature crisis, but there has no far been no action & little interest from Rishi Sunak & HM Treasury... so far. 4/

"The nation must be rewarded for its co-operation & resilience at a time of national crisis with economic renewal over mere recovery. It must also have fresh air and green space." Conservation charities will help aid the recovery. But right now they could do with some help. 5/5

We need a renewal based on green growth and delivering nature for people near where they live, not just a high-tariff economic recovery. NHS, National Parks, Planning System: post-War triumphs of vision. Our version needs to be investment that delivers nature for public wellbeing
