Theropithecus are quite rare infact in fossil record, so it was surprising why such high density of remains were there at first place. Many theories were formulated such as death due to unknown reason and bones were carried by flood or some predatory animal killed them.

When the researchers looked closely, they found out that most of bones including skull, vertebrate and teeth were broken and conditon of them were weathered to fresh. They also looked at sex and age of remains and found that 76 were juveniles and 14 were subadults & adults.

The numbers of males and females were found to he equal. The distinctive breakage of bones and butchery pattern which wasn't presented when same remains are discovered with no hominid intervention. It pointed at one direction, it was carried out by hominids, Homo erectus.

They also took the size of Theropithecus in consideration who were larger than present day Geladas, their only surviving cousions and were equal to size to female gorillas and than the stone tools found near the butchering site including stone axes with a foot long blade.

It was than formulated that most probably the trees where Theropithecus lived were encircled and than arrows were thrown at these primates dislodging them from trees and than stabbed them to take to main site just like how in present day Tanzania, baboons are captured or hunted.

However the researchers couldn't comprehend why Homo erectus specifically targeted the juveniles and why they pursued such deadly animal who could finish them just like hippos or elephants or buffaloes and the question to this day remain a question with no objective answer.
