With his big eyes and a large mouth that looks like a smile - the porcupine puffer is a guest favorite! By gulping water into a sack near their belly they “puff up” when threatened and look less attractive to predators. They can expand two to three times their normal size!

You can see diamondback terrapins in Bogue Sound Salt Marsh habitat! They never fully recovered from the 1900s when they were harvested for turtle soup. Now, bycatch reduction devices are used to help prevent terrapins from entering crab pots and help this population!

Visit bald eagles, Uwolhali and Shagoie Watha in their habitat on the Marsh Boardwalk. They're in our care because of injuries and cannot survive on their own in the wild. Once facing extinction, bald eagle populations recovered due to conservation efforts and species management!

It’s Plover Appreciation Day! Piping plovers are federally threatened and endangered shorebirds. They are ground nesters and therefore susceptible to habitat loss where they live. These cute little birds are fun to watch as they wander our beaches! Have you ever seen a plover?
