Take a look at the Brighton Museums blog where you can read my piece on the work of the Women’s Land Army, the ‘Cinderella Service’, during World War Two. There are lots of links to the #Brighton and #Sussex area! Read it here: bit.ly/3B9XKwN #WW2 #history #archives

Beautiful Anglo-Saxon gold disc pendant decorated with filigree and three cloisonné birds’ heads aranged in a triskele. Early 600s AD. From King’s Field Anglo-Saxon cemetery, Faversham, Kent, discovered by workers digging a new railway cutting in 1859. #Archaeology

This is an international endeavour, no nation is a boundary. But we want to engage with YOU, what graves (or funerary markers) are near you that might be in need of urgent repair, or highlighting the history. Share your photos too 👇

This little gem came out of one of the trenches and dates to around 1815! There's an "S" on one side of the clay pipe+ we think a "P" on the other. This is a common place for a maker's mark so we hope to identify them soon! #Archaeology #localhistory #claypipe @Sussex_Heritage

Lovely to see that the National Gallery plans to purchase Thomas Lawrence's 'Portrait of Charles William Lambton', aka 'The Red Boy'. Some may think it's a sentimental painting best suited to chocolate boxes, but I rather like it. More here: bit.ly/2W5J1my #artists #art

And here's the portrait of George IV seated, also by Sir Thomas Lawrence. Note the similar use of texture - and the colour red - in the painting. This sensitive portrait is currently on display in Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, so do stop by and take a look. #art 18th Century Studies #painting pic.x.com/d8jeWvIy88

#OnThisDay in 1890 Alfred Waterhouse's Hotel Metropole opened in Brighton, with its amazing #TurkishBath considered more luxurious than its not-insignificant rival in West St, by then 22 yrs old. Destroyed when new owners AVP built a swimming pool in its place in the early 1960s.

The #weather forecast for #Brighton doesn't look too good this week. Here's a throwback to 17 July 1850, when a 'most terrific and destructive' storm, with a 'deluge of rain', hit the town. Busy areas of the town, such as Pool Valley, were flooded. #Floods #archives #storms
