Good/bad day for British music: Handel- has there ever been a greater dramatist in music? - whose years here raised musical life to dizzy heights, b otd 1685; Elgar - a profound poet in music, and probably the first truly great British composer since Handel's death - d otd 1934.

Not all sources agree, but in general it seems that George Frederic Handel was born on 23 February 1685. I will doubtless get to know much more of his music as I work through Trevor Pinnock’s box, but in the meantime, what are your favourite Handel works and recordings?

Today we're remembering some of the great composers associated with the Abbey. George Frederic Handel was born on this day in 1685. Among his most loved works are his oratorio Messiah and the anthem Zadok the Priest, written for the coronation of George II in the Abbey in 1727

Thoughts from Mary Shelley (b otd 1797): “No man chooses evil because it is evil; he only mistakes it for happiness, the good he seeks.” “If I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear!” “When falsehood can look so like the truth, who can assure themselves of certain happiness?”
