Share this clip of my father. We must study him beyond the end of ‘I Have a Dream.’ (and that’s taken out of context, too) #MLK #MLKDay

52 U.S. Senators blocked voting rights legislation. Some of them tweeted on #MLKDay, while resolutely opposing legislation to prevent states from suppressing the votes of Black, Brown & rural communities. These Senators invoke a martyr, while castigating his legacy & teachings.

When I was a high school English teacher, I was constantly blown away by how willing and how eager my students were to grapple with the difficult topics and questions that arose from books we read. Young people are capable of far more than many adults often give them credit for.

I remember when I believed that character, integrity and reasonable degree of truthfulness were prerequisite for becoming a United States, Senator. I miss those days.

It’s embarrassing to admit, but my bring home pay as a veteran teacher with two degrees was $2500 per month. I had free insurance but couldn’t afford $900 for the family plan for my kids. I didn’t go to the doctor for checkups because my kids couldn’t go. This is America.

In Missouri, my legislators trust a 19-year-old to open carry a firearm with no training and no permit, but they don’t trust teachers with at least four years of training and an FBI background check to recommend books. True story.

I can’t think of a better use of Missouri’s surplus than ensuring (1) Missouri’s students have access to five days a week of education during the school year and (2) Missouri’s teachers are not the lowest paid in the United States. This is a dunker.

Big red flag: K-12 education lost more than 21,000 workers in September. Public education remains one of the least recovered industries from the pandemic. **There are 309,000 fewer teachers and support staff than pre-pandemic**

Mehlville School District ranks fourth lowest in St. Louis County for starting teacher salaries. The passage of Prop E would allow the district to be competitive among county districts. Visit bit.ly/msdr9prope to learn more! #msdr9
