1s made Stop Motion movies with their Grade 5 buddies about themselves and their favourite things! We watched them all today together. 5s helped us with clay, photographing, and spoke French with us the whole time. KanataHighlands
Impossible to pick “the best part” of these Grade 1s! They stole a piece of my heart this year. Each one went home with a very special book today - a class book in their own writing about “The Best Part of Me” KanataHighlands

We’re making a mural to showcase our beliefs about our classroom! Tracing body parts to create the lines in the background, then painting the lines. On top, we’ll put all of our classroom promises. KanataHighlands
We began with making classroom promises based on a books we’ve read this week! Then, we traced our body parts to create the colourful background. Then, we wrote our promises and attached them to our art to showcase our class code. KanataHighlands
We’ve been practicing ORAL sentences all week. Now, we’re learning what makes a sentence, and what a sentence must have. We’re steadily progressing towards writing our own as we build French vocabulary and understand the construct of a sentence. KanataHighlands
For us, Dot Day involved printmaking with recyclables and other round containers! Our art is drying over the weekend - next week we’ll finish off and hang them in our hallway! KanataHighlands
Brainstorming some expectations for lessons and whole body listening. We want others to feel heard and respected when they’re talking, and we want to be able to hear and learn. Grade 1 drawings helped us articulate what we want to see in our classroom. KanataHighlands
We’re discussing roles and responsibilities at home and at school. We used the Ozobots to trace tracks to home, school, or community to show we have those responsibilities. KanataHighlands
Our sound wall is GROWING! We now have 8 sounds (two vowels). Can your child blend each of these two-sound “words”? Try it! KanataHighlands tip: begin by saying the first sound, and hold it until you say the second sound (blend them together). Ex ffffffffffffa! KanataHighlands

We’re learning classroom vocab while we learn what a sentence is. Teaching grammar + conventions in context of student writing makes the 💡 go off! Why do we capitalize? Use periods? Have spaces between words? Grade 1s amped up their writing after this lesson! KanataHighlands
My student-teacher taught an engaging lesson on dental hygiene. We guessed some famous Disney teeth, talked about plaque and bacteria, and gave our “teeth” a good brush. She consolidated their learning with a class discussion afterwards. KanataHighlands
A tic tac toe centre for reading CV and VC “words” this week letters of the alphabet we’ve learned + practiced. Families- download this on Google Class. + play at home. Kids can teach you sounds or listen to me say them in the French sounds doc on Classroom KanataHighlands
C is a cool letter. It can make two sounds depending on which letter it’s paired with! We practiced pairing it with the vowels we know in a game of tic-tac-toe. KanataHighlands
We’re figuring out what makes a sentence a sentence. Students wrote their best sentence using words we’ve pulled this week from an image we were observing. We compared work - which ones were sentences vs. not quite sentences. Why? KanataHighlands
We’re working on these high frequency words that appear often in our decodable texts. This game, Race to 5, allows students to practice together - they say it, they write it, they read it. KanataHighlands
